I thought I would create a topic for people to share their tips and tricks for setting up their cars.

Well since I'm a newbie, I don't have really any tip to share but as I was looking for some advice on the Internet I've found this guide: http://www3.sympatico.ca/cbarnett/SetupMatrix.html
It explains what are each setting effects on the car. A good read. It's exactly what I was looking for as some settings are rather obscure to me.

This guide is referenced in the rfactor central website Setup Resources: http://www.rfactorcentral.com/setups/resources.cfm

If the members have other interesting guides, please post them here smile.gif

PS for the admin: I think this kind of topic would be better in a "rfactor" section rather than kopitiam but either there is no such section or I can't see it ... sad.gif

Those are alrite vaillant. I use them too.

And that rfactorcentral thread is full of it. But i used to overwhelm myself with setup tips and all...So i stick to one, which is that setup matrix.

Agreed. I went through few of them and it's confusing. Some tell you to use these settings or that settings but doesn't tell you really why to use them. And car setup is totally dependant of the car, mod, trackand more important the way each driver like is car to behave, so there is no real setup that will fit for everything.

I rather take that setup matrix that only explain what each single setting does to the car and find by myself which is the best combination. That's also part of the fun in sim to search and find them.
Although some advice from more experienced drivers are always welcome smile.gif

This is new. Its from iRacing. Its very easy to relate to and understand. I highly recommend it. happy.gif

thanks valiant. these links sure gonna help me a lot

that setup matrix. Looks like the same setup someone else posted in First3 forum long time ago. If I'm not mistaken, it was made by one of the members there too. Or it could be another...dun remember.

I'm really clueless about car setups. Even with guides...I have never found a good balanced setup without help.

There is another sets of setup guides that u can follow specifically for GT cars. I used if for GTR2 season to set up my car. I'll post up a link later.

When i started sim racing, I had no clue (now i have just a little) of what changes of the setup will give me. Then i learn that the controllers have to be setup in a proper way first. Meaning u should feel what u should feel from the FFB.

EDIT : Found it....Its this one.

but u all need realfeel plugin to feel your setup adjusting setup experience.

Mara, I feel like I want to kiss you. wub.gif laugh.gif

I've been struggling the whole week to find a good setup. My best laps were in the 2.01.5XX, about 3s above the best time you did. While I could probably improve little bit by practicing, I was sure there was something wrong with my setup as 3s was a pretty big gap ...

Thanks to your setup I just did 2.00.2XX just now in Paul Ricard after the test race after just 3 laps of testing with new setup. And once I get used to it and finish to tweak it, I'm sure I can go below 2.00.

Your setup didn't actually suit me during test race (I was actually not faster than with my setup), so I modified the setup i was using by mixing it with yours, and it worked wonderfully.

The key was the low wing, low tires pressure and toe in. I already was using a low wing, but was kinda scare to go below 150-155k for tire pressure. But then I saw you put 140k in the rear in your setup. I did the same and also lowered the front pressure.
As result the front of the car was very unstable even when just accelerating in straight line. I saw u decreased -.4 degrees toe in at the front and did the same for my setup and it did the trick. No more instability.

I'm just a bit worry about tire wear ... How many lap can you do with your setup before changing tire ? Can you run the full 10 laps of fuel without losing too much time in the last laps ?
maranello55
Yucks...LOL

So glad it worked for u.

I think u should go kiss azrink instead. It is from his setup that i developed mine. Azrink has a good sense of setting up the car in terms of how exactly he want the car to do.

Tyres are great for sprints but try not to scrub them too much or else u lose some grip and laptimes will suffer as the race go. Or u can switch to harder compund for fronts. More predictable.

for a newbie like me, i am quite confused about the car engine failure thingy. at my first thought, the car engine might blown if the temp (water+oil) are over hundred. but i was wrong, it blew even the temp at 85 deg celsius. cmne tuh? can anyone explain?

Yup...its one of the rfactor bug. Seems that engine failures are related to the type of damage set in game; wether its time scaled or normal. Personally i think it should be like u said. Temp related.

For most mod, engine failures are closely caused by higher revs than usual especially while using engine boost. So all i know to avoid engine failure in rfactor, i stay away from using boost while racing or downshifting to high revs too often.

yea man, u're true. the over boosting is like silent killah in the engine. i realise that when running couple of laps in the server last night. i blew it again in low temp. gosh, that was hard to tune it to the right spot since there is no indication that the engine gonna blow. unlike other tuning parts for example radiator and etc cuz there's such indicator that we can rely on.

A very nice explaination by Shaun abt caster and camber relation at 30:00...

Great video. I actually never really understood what is caster and how it affects the camber. I just new that more caster helps in the corner tongue.gif

Caster

(1)An alignment measurement on the front suspension that relates the tire contac
t patches to the steering axis. As caster increases, the forces attempting to st
r
aighten the steering wheel
will increase.

(2)Caster changes in road racing are best used to adjust the amount of steering
wheel feedback the driver wants to feel. This effect is generally positive until

instability occurs in corner exit or all
the way through high‐speed corners.

Note: On many cars when a caster adjustment is made the camber setting may also
change. This is simply the nature of these suspension geometries.

a) Tires

i)Tire Pressures: Probably the most powerful you can make as the tires’ performa
nce is has a strong effect every part of a lap.

(1)Ideal tire pressure is determined by the load the tire carries – higher press
ures handle higher loads better.  That is, in a heavier car, or a banked turn, o
r
compression at the base of a hill, more grip will be retained with higher press
u
res, whereas with lighter loads, lower pressures tend to give better grip.

(2)Increasing the pressure will in effect STIFFEN the sidewall of the tire, whic
h makes the tire more responsive to the driver’s inputs, particularly during the

initial turn‐in for a corner. The compromise is that as the tire becomes stiffer it wil
l start to lose compliance with the road. Therefore, bumps, curbs and violent in
p
uts from the driver may result in a loss of traction.

(3)Decreasing tire pressure will SOFTEN the sidewall of the tire. As the tire so
ftens, the compliance improves and, generally, grip improves. The downside is th
a
t the car will become less responsive to driver inputs, (i.e., the car feels slu
g
gish).

This is the most important aspects of setup first you have to deal with.

If you load motec, there is tire load given, set one ideal tyre pressure and record it, next time you go to a track, you can already basically calculate what tyre pressure to use based on the loading of the car. Although I'm not that hardworking to do it, but if I find that I need to do it, I will do it.

Ah...iRacing Setup Guide. I posted it at the previous version of the forum. Im sharing it again with you all.
